a normal day

On October 18th, my daughter was born and I became the mother of three children. Hundreds of miles away, on the same day, another baby girl was born and another woman added the third child to her family. We were complete strangers at that time, but our love of photography and family brought us together. We started to have a conversation about motherhood with images, because we tell stories with our cameras. Since some tales are so similar, and some are not, we decided to collaborate and share a photo a week from a normal day as a mother to three.

“Normal day, let me be aware of the treasure you are. Let me learn from you, love you, bless you before you depart. Let me not pass you by in quest of some rare and perfect tomorrow. Let me hold you while I may, for it may not always be so. One day I shall dig my nails into the earth, or bury my face in the pillow, or stretch myself taut, or raise my hands to the sky and want, more than all the world, your return.”     – Mary Jean Irion

you have an on again off again kind of relationship.  when you are off, it seems as if the walls are about to come crashing down around us.  but when you are on, oh my are you ever on.  like tonight when you gave each other sweet potato fry kisses.  i mean seriously sweet.

I run a business named Click Click Love. It is like my fourth baby. I scout out light and sketch and dream my future shoots. You are good enough to oblige.

The days grow longer and the bedtimes steadily get pushed back to make room for more playtime, for more time together as a family.  Some days my husband is able to get home from work early enough for us to take a walk through the neighborhood just before bed.  I push the baby in the single.  And my husband pushes the big kids in the double up and down the hills as the sun begins to disappear.  That golden light kisses us all so sweetly.  It begs to be photographed.  I never bring my camera though.   Or if I do, I don’t use it.  I am trying to be more present during these special family walks.  Plus, I need both hands to push that stroller up those hills!!   By the time we return to our yard, the kids are ready to jump out of the stroller and run around the yard squeezing in what little bit of playtime is left before bed.  And, I of course am racing against the sun to get my camera and capture it.   I hadn’t even realized just how much I adore this little family tradition that we have created until now.

Your dad built a crazy slide this weekend. Our big old tree in the yard is fast becoming a circus space for you two to play.

your daddy plays a monumental role in the bedtime routine.  he gets you two ready for bed while  i “boob” the baby to sleep.  so, on nights when he works late, i let things slip a bit.  like when the four of us went for a long walk past your bedtime and you ate your dinner out of a plastic bag.
